This is a selective medium for the cultivation of Taylorella equigenitalis or the contagious equine metritis organism (CEMO) that is the etiological agent for contagious equine metritis.
Enzymatic digest of casein and soy peptone provide the required nitrogen, carbon and vitamins, and sodium chloride maintains the osmotic balance of the medium. Sodium sulphite is a reducing agent and L-cystine is an essential amino acid. In addition to this, the medium is further enriched by the inclusion of 7% chocolated horse blood. Amphotericin B is added to suppress the growth of contaminating fungi and yeasts and both clindamycin and trimethoprim are added to suppress bacterial contaminants.
